Austin is changing fast. New buildings, more traffic, and a booming tech scene have transformed the city. But if you’re like me, you miss the slower pace, the live music, and the laid-back community feel that made Austin special in the first place. The good news is the old Austin still exists—you just have to know where to look. Here are the top six OG must-see places to visit in Austin:
1. The Continental Club. One of my first stops when I want to reconnect with the soul of Austin is the Continental Club. Located on South Congress and open since 1955, this iconic venue feels like a time capsule. The music is raw, real, and unforgettable—an essential stop for anyone wanting to experience authentic Austin sound.
2. Deep Eddy Cabaret. Just down the road from the Continental Club is Deep Eddy Cabaret, a true dive bar that’s been around since 1951. It’s simple, no-nonsense, and full of character. When you walk in, you get that feeling. This is the Austin that built its reputation on community and creativity.
3. The Herb Bar. If you’re into calm, healing spaces, The Herb Bar is a cozy spot that’s been holding its ground since 1986. It offers natural remedies, herbs, and wellness products in a space that feels like something out of old Austin’s bohemian past.
4. Casa de Luz. Not far from The Herb Bar is Casa de Luz, a plant-based restaurant and wellness community that’s been around since 1991. They serve organic meals in a tranquil setting—no phones, no rush, just real connection and nourishment. It’s a peaceful retreat that honors Austin’s slower, more intentional side.
5. Barton Springs. No list of old Austin spots would be complete without Barton Springs. Tucked inside Zilker Park, this natural spring-fed pool has been part of the city’s heart long before Austin became what it is today. The water is clear and cold, and the whole place feels untouched by time—even in winter, it’s magical.
6. The Driskill Hotel. If you want to step even further back in time, visit the Driskill Hotel. Built in 1886, this grand hotel is one of the oldest buildings in the city. From the architecture to the atmosphere, everything about it reminds you of the elegance and charm that once defined downtown Austin.
